SILK PAINTING IN BURGUNDY, FRANCE
Thank you for your interest in Silk Painting in France! This course is designed to welcome the beginning silk painter, as well as those interested in more advanced techniques. Above all, it will offer an unmatched opportunity to explore silk painting in the cradle of this esteemed art. All necessary course materials will be provided. I am working with Marsh and Uschi Niner, who have been hosting painting workshops in the village of Corbigny in the Burgundy region for the past eight years, and have graciously opened up their “Art in Burgundy“ program to include our class. This year we will be combining several activities with their plein air group. This package includes ground travel arrangements based on beginning and end points in Paris. Participants will make their own air travel arrangements. This year there is also an opportunity for a limited number of people to visit Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny on a one-day excursion on July 7, a Monday - the only day of the week painting is permitted there. While this is a wonderful opportunity “en plein air“, it is also open to silk painters who may wish to take advantage of this inspirational setting for drawing, sketches, or any form of “studies“. Participants are advised to be in Paris by July 3, where artists will be met at Charles de Gaulle airport and escorted to a hotel there (we usually stay at the IBIS). There will be an opportunity in the afternoon to visit central Paris as a group, perhaps to a museum, and other popular locations such as Montmarte. For dinner, we like the lively Latin Quarter before returning to the hotel. Friday, July 4th, is a travel day: we leave Paris on our tour bus first thing in the morning, but we will have a leisurely stop for lunch along the way, with ample time for getting settled in at the Hotel de l’Europe upon our arrival in Corbigny. Our silk painting program begins Saturday. That evening we have scheduled a reception in the Chateau de Villemolin, where the Marquise comes from a family of silk importers in Lyon, the silk capital of France since the Middle Ages. Thereafter we will be immersed painting in our studio in the charming local abbey, with possible side trips to local venues. Provisions have been made for food and drink (see itinerary below) and our attendees can expect a delectable sampling of the local cuisine. I look forward to gathering with a lively and creative group of silk artists. A bientot! Sarah
