Sarah Pierce began investigating the time-honored art of painting on silk in the year 2000 and was immediately captivated by its allure and possibilities for artistic expression.

Silk as a medium for design and expression dates back to ancient China; the process of applying dyes and colors to a finished, fully-woven piece of fabric is less than 200 years old, having evolved in industrialized Western Europe. Modern silk painting usually involves techniques developed by the French, which are continually being refined by ever more artists around the world.

Sarah brings her unerring sense of color to every piece she produces. Her experimentation has expanded the range of silk painting techniques she employs in numerous projects, and she continues to work with a variety of types of dyes. Her designs put vibrant bold hues in an interplay with more subtle textures and delicate shapes and shadings. She has long been fascinated with the art Medieval Europe and Asia, as well as the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements of the past century. She has also taken much inspiration from Nature, while continuing to explore the abstract blendings and patterns that "happen" uniquely on each individual piece of silk.

She teaches her approach to silk painting for various art associations and businesses in California and Arizona. She also accepts commissioned projects.
